Paris in the Springtime
Bill and Linda Cleveland, owners of Antietam
Travel Service, Inc. traveled to Europe in June, visiting London and Paris.
Flying from Washington's Dulles airport to London's Heathrow
airport, they stayed at the Harrington Hall Hotel in Kensington.
London's "Tube" subway system makes all areas of London easily
accessible, so they visited many of the typical tourist destinations
during their 4-day stay, including Tower of London, Piccadilly
Circus, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Kensington High
Street, Covent Gardens and Oxford Street for shopping, Big Ben, and
Westminster Abbey.
They traveled by Eurostar high-speed rail from London to Paris in
about two-and-a-half hours. It takes only 20 minutes for the train
to pass under the English Channel. They stayed in Paris for 4 days
at the Belmont Hotel, three blocks from the Champs d'Elysee and the Arc
de Triumph and easy walking distance to the Eiffel Tower. They
visited the Musee du Louvre, where they saw the Mona Lisa (La
Gioconda), Venus de Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace, as
well as hundreds of other pieces of art and sculpture. The Louvre is
simply too large to see it all in a single day.

Linda and Bill Cleveland near the Eiffel Tower in Paris
Of course, no visit to Paris is complete without a visit to the
top of the Eiffel Tower. The view is breathtaking. They also took a
scenic cruise on the Seine River, visited Sacre
Coeur, a Catholic basilica atop Montmartre, the highest hill of
Paris, and Disneyland Paris.
Prices in London and Paris are comparable to New York City. The
cost of a 16-ounce (½ liter) Coke was
typically £1.00-2.00 ($1.80-3.60) in London and
€1.00-2.00 ($1.25-2.50) in Paris. A good meal for two in Paris
at an outdoor cafe on the Champs d'Elysee could be had for $50.00,
including wine.
Why not visit Paris in the springtime yourself? |
