Travel Destination - U.S. Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin
Islands, situated 40 miles east of Puerto Rico, are a group of about
50 islands, each covered with lush tropical vegetation and
surrounded by
beautiful beaches. Hot throughout the year, high temperatures range
between the mid-80's and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, while lows remain
generally in the upper 60's to about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The
islands have fairly evenly distributed rainfall, with August to
October being the wettest months.
St. Croix is the largest of the U.S.
Virgin Islands, consisting of 83 square miles of rolling
ex-plantation land. Christiansted is one of the major towns
and shows an
early Danish influence. Fort Christiansvaern, dating from 1774, and
the Old Custom House are among its historic attractions.
St. Thomas is the
second-largest and the most cosmopolitan of this island chain.
It is long and narrow, rising rapidly to a ridge, and possesses an
excellent deep-water harbor that is frequently filled with cruise
ships. Like St. Croix, it retains
much of its early Danish influence. The main town, Charlotte Amalie, is the
capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Imported goods from all over the
world make it a fabulous shopping area. Stores in remodeled Danish
warehouses line each side of picturesque Main Street. Cobblestone alleys with numerous
shops lead down to
the waterfront opposite Front Street. Blackbeard's Castle is the
earliest fortification in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Other attractions
include Fort Christian, built in 1672; the Coral World Observatory;
the Frederick Lutheran Church, built in 1850; Government House;
Bluebeard's Tower, the 19th-century pirate's one-time abode; and the
Synagogue on Crystal Gade, one of the oldest in the western
hemisphere. On the northern coast is Magens Bay, renowned as one of
the world's top ten beaches.
St. John is the most unspoiled of the islands. It has
no airport, and two-thirds of the island's deep valleys and most of
its shoreline have been set aside as the Virgin Islands National Park.
Cruz Bay is a small town offering excellent gift shops and dive
centers. Trunk Bay is a beautiful beach with very good diving.
Accommodations on the island are limited.
